My Style & Philosophy

I live by the wise words of Ernest Hemingway: "for a true writer each (work) should be a new beginning where he tries again for something that is beyond attainment.” I put everything I have into each piece I work on and - whether it be commercial, artistic, marketing, or journalistic - I give it my all. The Monarch - A Novel

Paperback1.jpg

Fisherman, publican, father - his influence reaches throughout North East England. Meet Jerry Compton. a friendly man, a just man, a reasonable man. The fairest of his profession.

The Monarch, a modern masterpiece, is a searing portrayal of 1990s Northumberland, England and the North of Ireland. It is also the intimate story of the Compton family, at once drawn together and ripped apart by its unique position at the core of Northumbrian society in the aftermath of the Miners' Strike, Ireland's Troubles and industrial and agricultural decline. Throw in a young Irish woman and her young family for good measure to further expose the regions' issues whilst hopefully choosing a path to success and enlightenment. Will they succeed and embrace the coming century, or will they succumb to the negative fatalism so typical of many of their forbears?

Marrying traditional English and North Eastern dialects with a free and elaborate style, the author employs realism and streams of consciousness to portray North East England and Ireland in a way that resonates with audiences today and far beyond (Click image, left, to view details).

Poetry

A Treasured Collection

Trees

Tired Sunday

Autumnal glare through shining glass,
A tree top shakes from violent gusts:
Breath into an upturned lung.

Misty Woodland

Happy Valentine

A birth a year, or nearly.

Upbringing, all fraught with joy and difficulties,
A cause for weary ventures.

Vigour and love renewed, yet delayed once more,

As Valentine burns bright once more:

Forth again in familial play.

Castle by the Lake

Lustrous Advent

Midst joys of seasons past,

First Valentine's,

Then Summer's happy prize,

A violet shrunk

And a poppy's lustre dimmed:

Tokens of savoured remembrances.

Again, with Summer's advent,

New buds, recharged,

Herald another lustre;

Vivid, rare and glaring bloom.

Bio

Unveiling the Writer

Interested in travel, writing and politics, and graduating from Westminster University with an MA in Journalism Studies after a degree in DeMontfort specialising in politics, history and English literature, I went on to teach adults in various colleges, universities and organisations throughout northern England before the looming Brexit crisis.  Moving to the Republic of Ireland to escape to the refuge of the EU, a project I have supported all my life, I am once again polling for Ipsos Mori (this time in Northern Ireland), something that has kept my ear to the ground, off and on, for over 13 years. Extensively traveled, I have visited over 30 countries throughout Europe, North Africa, Asia, Australasia and The Americas.
